Many cars can be called classics or highly desirable, but few have achieved the cult status required to be called a legend. The Porsche 356A Speedster is one of those rare cars.

First produced in Austria from 1948-49 and then in Germany from 1950-55, the 356 was Porsche's first production car. Built with speed in mind, Porsche focused on balance and lightness to achieve performance goals, unlike other manufacturers who relied on larger engines. Its elegant yet lightweight aluminium body was hand-crafted and weighed 160 kilograms less than the 356 Coupe. In 1956, Porsche introduced a revised version, dubbed the 356A, which featured significant updates while retaining its iconic looks.

Enter US importer Max Hoffman, who convinced Porsche that there was a market for their cars in America. Hoffman asked for an affordable, stripped-down Porsche priced under $3,000. Porsche responded with the 356 1500 Speedster, which quickly became a sensation in the motorsport world and a hit in the sunny coastal states of the US. Its most notable features included a low and rounded windscreen, a lightweight body and a special transmission that made it a favourite with racers. Powered by a 1.6-litre flat-four engine, the 356A Speedster's lightweight frame allowed it to reach 60 mph in about 13.9 seconds and a top speed of 99.4 mph.

This fine 1:18 scale model represents the Type 2 (or 'T2') variant, revised in 1957 to incorporate exhausts through the rear bumper over-riders. Handcrafted and finished in collaboration with Porsche, it uses original paintwork, materials, archive images and drawings to ensure complete accuracy. Each 1:18 scale Amalgam model is delivered in a luxury black box with a protective outer carrying case. Each model is mounted on a polished black acrylic base, protected by a clear acrylic dust cover, and comes with a booklet containing the certificate of authenticity and information about the car. The model title and original branding are displayed on a polished stainless steel plaque mounted on the front of the base.
