Het champagnehuis Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin werd opgericht in 1772. Het huis dankt zijn naam aan Nicole-Barbe Clicquot-Ponsardin, een zakenvrouw die na de dood van haar man jarenlang leiding gaf aan het bedrijf. De weduwe liet op haar beurt het champagnehuis en een groot deel van de wijngaarden na aan haar compagnon Édouard Werlé. Samen met zijn zoon runde hij het huis tot in 1987. Toen kwam Veuve Clicquot in handen van het luxeconcern LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy), vandaag de grootste champagneproducent. Dit champagnehuis bezit ook Moët & Chandon, Mercier, Krug en Ruinart.
